Title:Iran: Bomb Attack On Islamic Republic Party Headquarters
Date:28th June 1981
Summary:A series of bomb attacks claimed the lives of several of the country's leaders. The Chief Justice, Ayatollah Behesti, 4 Cabinet Ministers and more than twenty members of the Majlis were among some 70 people killed at the headquarters of the Islamic Republican Party in June. PM Mohammad Ali Rajai survived that attack only to fall victim to another two months later. By then, he had become President. He and his PM, Mohammad Java Bahonar, died in a explosion at the PM's office in August. The number of arrests, summary trials and executions ran into thousands. The new wave of repression started after clashes between fundamentalists and supporters of the former President, Abolhassan Bani Sadr, dismissed by Ayatollah Khomeini.
