Summary:An outbreak of rioting struck British cities in mid-summer. This was Liverpool, one of the worst affected. There were similar scenes in Manchester and parts of London. Social workers blamed unemployment, poor housing and the hostility of frustrated young people towards the police. Unlike an earlier outbreak in Brixton, South London, the riots were not basically racial. Black and white youths took part together.
