Summary:A Soviet helicopter patrols the Kunar Valley in Afghanistan. Below, the Mujahedin guerrillas watch and wait. The Soviet forces, in the 2nd year since they entered Afghanistan, have control of the air; but their convoys, and those of the Afghan government they support, are in constant danger of ambush. The guerrillas come down from the surrounding hills, hoping to capture arms and ammunition to help them carry on the struggle. Another main route, south from the capital, Kabul. Afghan government troops have the task of keeping it open. Afghans are liable to conscription from fifteen to thirty-five; but many disappear to avoid it, or defect to the Mujahedin after they have been trained. NOTE: Date is approximate.
