Summary:After none of the candidates in El Salvador's presidential elections in March received sufficient votes for a majority, a run-off ballot was held in May between Christian Democrat leader Jose Napoleon Duarte and Roberto D'Aubuisson, leader of the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance. Duarte became the eventual winner and fulfilled his election pledge to negotiate with anti-government guerrillas who controlled large areas of rural El Salvador.
