Title:New Zealand: Labour Party Poll Victory Ends Years Of National Party Rule
Date:14th July 1984
Summary:New Zealand's Labour Party swept Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon out of power in general elections on July 14. The country's new leader was David Lange, who became Labour leader last year. The new Parliament had 56 Labour members, 37 National Party and two Social Credit. The National Party loss was seen as a strong rejection of the Muldoon leadership but Sir Robert said he would remain leader of the Opposition and of the National Party. The government immediately devalued the dollar by 20 per cent and a November budget contained stringent measures to restructure the economy.
