Summary:Britain and China signed an agreement in Peking on September 26 which would return Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The ceremony in the Great Hall of the People ended two years of protracted negotiations. The agreement gave Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy, allowing it to keep its own legislation and legal system for 50 years after the present lease expired.
