A Visnews camera crew filming in Afghanistan recently reported that the Jalez base camp near the Pakistan border in the Spingar mountains was one of several major supply depots to the Afghan resistance movement. Hundreds of crates of ammunition and rocket bombs of every calibre were apparently stored in log cabins until recently.
When the base was left devastated by a rocket attack the rebels moved their whole base underground, the camera crew said.
Several thousand men could be housed in the warren of caves. Many rooms were equipped with beds and there were even generators providing electricity. Ammunition and weapons were stacked to the roofs of the caves.
Heavy snowfalls meant the rebels were finding it difficult to prepare for the spring offensive although the task of transporting weapons and ammunition to the front had been facilitated for the first time by motorised transport. With no proper roads the trucks had to use rough narrow tracks through the mountains and often became stuck in snow and ice.
