- Story Text: Kenya and Somalia have agreed to resume normal relations and settle their four-year-old border dispute. After mediation talks in Arusha, Tanzania, President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya and Somali Premier Mohammed Haji Ibrahim Egal clasped hands in friendship and signed a "memorandum of understanding" on Saturday (28 Oct).
The talks were held under the mediation of Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, with host President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and President Milton Obote of Uganda present as observers.
The Arusha talks followed on agreement reached at the recent Organisation of African Unity summit conference in Congo-Kinshasa by which Somalia and Kenya agreed to respect each other's sovereignty and resolve their differences.
Relations had deteriorated following border clashes in a dispute dating back to Kenya's independence from Britain in 1963, when Somalia made territorial claims to parts of Kenya where many Somalia live.
Kenya severed trade relations in June last year and Somalia retailed by banning air traffic between the two countries.
Prime Minister Egal and President Kenyatta agreed at Arusha to maintain peace and security in the border area, refrain from hostile propaganda and encourage propaganda promoting friendship. The two states will also consider measures to encourage the extension of economic and trade links.
