- Story Text: President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, arrived in Dar Es Salaam on Tuesday (10 October), for a 24-hour visit to discuss the situation in East Africa with President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania.
Their talks were expected to centre on the terms of the peace accord reached last week between Tanzania and Uganda.
President Mobutu was expected to brief President Nyerere on talks he held with President Idi Amin in Kampala last week.
President Mobutu was the third African head of state to visit Tanzania since the border conflict with Uganda flared up in mid-September. President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, and Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre, who mediated in the peace agreement, have already discussed the East African situation with President Nyerere.
President Mobutu flew to Dar Es Salaam from Ethiopia, after discussions with Emperor Haile Selassie.
SYNOPSIS: Dar Es Salaam airport ... and, on Tuesday, traditional Ngoma dancers stepped out a welcome to President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire.
President Mobutu was making a one-day visit, to discuss last week's peace agreement between Uganda and Tanzania, with President Julius Nyerere.
The Zaire leader flew in after talks in Ethiopia with Emperor Haile Selassie.
He was met at Dar Es Salaam airport by President Nyerere, and by Tanzania's Second Vice President, Rashidi Kawawa.
During his brief visit, President Mobutu was expected to discuss the terms of last week's peace accord in a private session with President Nyerere.
He was expected to brief President Nyerere on talks he held in Kampala with President Idi Amin, before the peace agreement was reached.
President Mobutu was the third African head of state to visit Tanzania recently - an indication of the anxiety of African leaders to heal the border conflict which erupted last month, after a force of Ugandan exiles invaded Uganda from Tanzania.
The two leaders were also expected to discuss relations between their countries, in the session of talks at State House that followed the official welcome at Dar Es Salaam airport.
