- Story Text: Mexicans in city of Toluca on Saturday (April 24) proved size does matter as they created the world's longest chorizo sausage, a feat for which they expect to be awarded a Guinness World Record.
Thirty chorizo makers from Toluca, which lies an hour west of Mexico City, worked for three-straight days to lay out one kilometre (0.06 miles) of sausage, weighing in at more than one ton of meat.
"The last Guinness record was held by Ourense, Spain with a length of 110.15. Today I can tell you that the municipality of Toluca in the Republic of Mexico has the Guinness Record of 1,000 metres," said Jaime Lopez, the spokesperson of the municipality of Toluca.
Organisers of the record breaking challenge want to use the publicity generated from the record to promote Toluca's chorizo producers, who make some of the best Mexican chorizo.
"Chorizo is a product that represents the Municipality of Toluca and through this Guinness Record for the longest chorizo in the world we want our product to be known internationally along with producers in the municipality of Toluca," explained Lopez.
Toluca and chorizo are intrinsically linked in Mexico, even Toluca's soccer club is known as "los choriceros" or the chorizo makers.
Those attending the record-breaking event were invited to take a piece of chorizo history home with them as the sausage was put on sale to the public. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
