- Story Text: Shootout with naval police leaves six men dead, all of whom police say were drug cartel members Mexican authorities said six drug gang members died after a
shootout with the Mexican Navy on Thursday (March 25) in the northern state of Nuevo Leon.
The shootout occurred in the Cerralvo municipality, 90 kilometers northeast of the city of Moneterrey.
Naval police said armed gunmen riding in two luxury SUVs opened fire on them. Two of the men were shot to death on the spot, while the other two died
in a nearby stream, shot by police who said they tried to escape.
Minutes later, police and gunmen exchanged fire again, leaving two more suspects dead.
Authorities said they seized several high-caliber rifles, numerous ammunition and both vehicles.
Police then warned area residents to stay home in case the violence triggered additional attacks by drug gangs.
Thousands of people die in Mexico every year as drug cartels battle for control of the smuggling routes from South America, where the drugs are grown, to the U.S. consumers.
President Felipe Calderon has sent military personnel across the country to support local law enforcement efforts. In Cerralvo, the Navy regularly patrols streets seeking drug traffickers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
