- Story Text: Oscar de la Renta presented his Resort 2012 collection inspired by Picasso's colourful cubist paintings at the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City at the weekend.
Angular shapes in contrasting bright colours mixed with Spanish elements such as embroidery and sombreros dominate the collection.
Dresses, trousers and skirts above the knee in blues, oranges, black dots, dashes of red and black and white cubes with a definite Spanish flair provide a bold yet feminine look.
South African Victoria's Secret beauty Candice Swanepoel opened the fashion show which lasted about 30 minutes.
Resort 2012 was first presented last May in New York. In Mexico City, some models wore Napoleon-esque hats.
Oscar de la Renta was invited by Mexico City's government and was named tourism ambassador.
"I would like to give thanks for Mexico's warm welcome. The only shame is that I was not allowed to sing last night. I would've loved to sing rancheras which I all know by heart and they didn't let me. In other words, I'll be able to return to sing them all," he said.
Seventy-eight-year-old Oscar de la Renta, who has designed clothes since the 1960s, admitted he has still much to learn.
"I have great passion for what I do and for me, everyday is a new day where I learn something. The day when I say, 'I've learnt everything,' I'll stop doing what I do."
Although the U.S. market makes up about two-thirds of Oscar de la Renta's sales, the brand is targeting international sales to rise to 50 percent from the current 35 percent.
Oscar de la Renta, best known for ultra-luxurious women's cocktail dresses and evening gowns, has begun exploring men's lines focusing more on casual than formal wear. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
