- Story Text: Scouts in Mexico City smash world record with massive fleur-de-lis crafted from flattened cans.
The Scout Association of Mexico broke the record Sunday for the largest fleur-de-lis in the world for the ninth consecutive year.
The scouts crafted the design on Mexico City's Constitution Plaza by arranging 1 million crushed aluminum cans. Thousands of young scouts from all over the country gathered to create the fleur-de-lis, the global symbol of scout brotherhood. The scouts collected more than 1,300 cans, which were used in part to promote a culture of recycling among the citizens.
Raúl Sánchez, head of the Scout Association of Mexico, said, "This year we will break the record again, and it pleases us to be able to be generous, to give this contribution that each one of the scouts makes, they are just some cans but they all count and add up to achieve this record and to contribute to solving many of the problems of our society."
Funds generated by selling the materials will be donated to charities in Mexico and Argentina.
"I feel very happy to help with this noble cause because this is why we are scouts, to serve and to help," said Cesar Estrada, a Mexico City scout.
Scout leaders from Mexico, Argentina, Britain and El Salvador attended the event. A notary certified that the design measured 100 meters and broke the previous record. The association has held this activity every year since 2000. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
