- Story Text: The bloodied body of a German woman was found on Tuesday (August 17) inside the home of her boyfriend on the Caribbean coast of Mexico.
Police said the remains of Carolin Brust were discovered in a relatively new neighbourhood in the town of Puerto Aventuras in the state of Quintana Roo.
According to authorities, the town was populated largely by workers who held jobs at the nearby tourist destination of Riviera Maya.
Officials said that initial investigation indicated that Brust had been killed with a sharp object.
"It definitely is a homicide, it was committed with a sharp object piercing the throat and then cutting across," said Deputy State Attorney General for Quintana Roo, Rodolfo Garcia Pliego.
The body was found on Tuesday morning, on the floor of a bedroom, bloody and nude.
Police believe the victim had been raped and are investigating her boyfriend and a group of construction workers who were working nearby.
Garcia Pliego said Brust, who is thought to be in her 20s, had come to Riviera Maya a year ago and become romantically involved with one of the scuba diving instructors.
The couple kept in touch by email when she returned to Germany. One month ago, she came back to Mexico to live with her boyfriend.
"What we have been told is that a year ago this person was staying in Riviera Maya, where she took a diving course and had a relationship with one of the diving instructors, who was her boyfriend. We're told they kept in contact by email and recently she decided to come here and he offered to find her work. We are told that the girl was a biologist interested in working in Riviera Maya and came here about a month ago," he said.
Brust's body is undergoing forensic examinations and her family is expected to arrive in Mexico later this week to claim her remains. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
