- Story Text: Mexican boxing icon WBC President Jose Sulaiman dies in Los Angeles aged 82 following an illustrious four-decade career at the helm of the World Boxing Council.
The President of the World Boxing Council Jose Sulaiman died in Los Angeles on Thursday (January 16) afternoon, the boxing body reported to media in a statement.
Sulaiman, 82, had been battling ill health since receiving a heart operation in October and had recently suffered further health complications.
Dubbed the "father of boxing", Sulaiman was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico where his interest in the sport began as a local amateur boxer.
Joining the World Boxing Council in 1968, he quickly moved through the organisation's ranks and was appointed WBC President in 1975, a post he held for four decades.
In 2007, Sulaiman was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame for an illustrious career that saw him work alongside boxing greats such as Don King and Muhammad Ali, which he awarded the title of "King of boxing" during the 50th anniversary convention of the WBC in Cancun.
Sulaiman's body is expected to be returned home to Mexico for a funeral service. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
