- Story Text: Bruce Beresford-Redman, former producer of the television series "Survivor," has appealed a decision by a Mexican judge who sentenced him to 12 years in prison for murdering his wife in Cancun, his lawyer said on Friday (March 13).
A judge convicted Beresford-Redman of murdering 41-year-old restaurant owner Monica Burgos while the couple vacationed with their two children at a Cancun resort in April 2010, the attorney general's office of Mexico's Quintana Roo state reported.
"With the sentence and in the global context to first know the criteria that the judge used, the judicial analysis of evidence carried out. In this case we value the reasons for the judge in his decision to hand down a sentence of this magnitude. In this case it was the minimum," said Quintana Roo's Attorney General Gaspara Armando Garcia.
The hefty sentence comes months after the U.S. citizen sneaked out video footage of his 'prison diaries' to American network CBS to reveal the conditions of life behind bars in Mexico.
Beresford-Redman's defence lawyer told media that the court's verdict was to punish his client for the release of his videos.
"He told me, "calm down Carlos, we'll wait." We already knew it that with the release of the video which show all the irregularities and all the human rights violations in the jail we already knew what was going to happen. He told me, "Carlos, I already knew this. It's nothing, we know this is vengeance for the video that came out which showed the poor conditions of the prison," said defence lawyer, Carlos Grajales.
Beresford-Redman's lawyer, Jaime Cancino said that he would take the case to the Supreme Court if necessary.
U.S. marshals arrested the producer in Los Angeles in November 2010 and extradited him to Mexico shortly after.
During a July 2011 extradition hearing, prosecutors said Beresford-Redman killed Burgos for insurance money and custody of the children. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
