- Story Text: U.S.boxing promoter Don King arrived in Mexico for fights described as "two wars" and was immediately in trouble himself -- when he was robbed.
King declined to give details about the mugging until after a news conference held on Wednesday (March 4) to promote Saturday's fights.
Mexicans Julio Cesar Chavez and Miguel Angel Gonzalez will contest the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Lightweight title, while Nicaragua's Rosendo Alvarez will try to take the Super Featherweight title off Ricardo Lopez.
King had also wanted Mexico's Laura Serrano to fight U.S.boxer Irsa Gigrah and Gigrah's compatriot Christy Martin to fight Daniella Somers of Belgium on the undercard of Saturday's fights. But Mexico City boxing commissioner Victor Lopez said he was bound by 1940s-era city regulations that prohibits women from professional boxing, even though it is allowed in other parts of the country.
King called for an end to Mexico City's 50-year-old ban on women's boxing.
"All around the world women are known as equals now," King said."Give the women their rights and then if they want to be boxers, doctors, movie stars, dancing girls, teachers, mothers, whatever, that is their prerogative to do so," King said.
World Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman said appeals to city authorities to allow the women to fight had been turned down.
Legendary boxer Chavez gave King a cheap plastic watch during the news conference as a symbolic replacement for the one stolen.
Both men have made millions of dollars together over the years and have been loyal to each other throughout several controversies and legal problems.
King then returned to the subject of Saturday night, pounding his fist on the table and shouting "La Guerra! La Guerra! La Guerra!", Spanish for "the war" and the promotional title of Saturday's main event.
After the news conference he said that four armed men stopped his car, put a gun to his head and stole his wristwatch shortly after he arrived in Mexico late on Tuesday.
Lawyers for King began a high court action in London on Wednesday against his former business partner Frank Warren, alleging that the European promoter owes him millions of dollars under a joint contract.
