- Story Text: Women's world record marathon holder Paula Radcliffe joined an estimated 33,000 runners in London on Sunday (October 16) in a 10 kilometres run in the park.
Three meetings were held in London, in the centre, south and east of the city, and the Hyde Park event had to be run in three races as so many runners wanted to take part.
Radcliffe holds the women's world record for the 10km road event at 30 minutes 21 seconds set in February 2003 but played down stories that she was attempting to beat it. The first race was won in a time of 31.08 seconds by club runner Keith Gerrard, second was Adam Hickey in 31 mins 35 seconds and Radcliffe finished third, the first woman, in 31:19.
Afterwards she said that she had enjoyed the run as she had just begun training again and "needed to blow away the cobwebs."
The RunLondon races have been organised for five years and have encouraged over 100,000 people of all running abilities to run a race for pleasure. They also fit in with Britain's programme to increase fitness and participation in sport before the 2012 Olympic Games which will be held in the capital. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
