Summary:Fire broke out in the Kinross gold mine, 100kms east of Johannesburg on September 16, spewing poisonous gases through the underground passages. Rescue teams evacuated some 2,200 men but more than 170 had been declared dead by September 17. All but five were black miners from neighbouring countries. It was the worst disaster in South African gold-mining history.
