- Story Text: Singapore's Changi Airport (September 5) hosted an unusual race on Saturday (September 5). A Boeing 747, owned by Jett8 Cargo Airlines, was pitted against a Porsche 911 GT3 racing car in the first such race held in Asia.
The race was held on the main runway and its parallel taxiway which were closed for other traffic during the race.
"I'm going to win today, I hope," said Singapore driver Yuey Tan, who competes in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia series.
After preparations and entertainment, Captain Peter Leo Chin Fang taxied the Boeing 747 to the end of the runway while Yuey Tan drove the Porsche to the end of the taxiway.
After a false start, the run produced an extremely close finish, with the jumbo-jet and car crossing the finish line almost together before the aircraft lifted into the air.
The race stewards, after a short delay, declared the car the winner. Yuey Tan received a trophy from Lim Hwee Hua, a cabinet minister in the Prime Minister's Office.
"I got off the line really really well, I was happy with that. I got lots of grip on the tyres and the rest was history. We just went full pelt and we managed to beat the plane," said Yuey Tan.
The race marked the start of the build-up to the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix on September 27. This will be the second Grand Prix staged there and once again will take place under floodlights.
Before Saturday's race, a small ceremony was held to launch the Porsche 911 GT3 in the Singaopore and Asia-Pacific region. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
