- Story Text: Mike Hailwood of Britain set new records today (Sunday) in the 'Daily Mail' Motorcycle Race of the Year at Mallory Park, Leicestershire, U.K. Hero of the day , he established a new lap record of 93.46 m.p.h., and of 91.31 m.p.h. for the total distance of the 30 lap race.
The day warmed up on the heats and finals of the threewheeler and the 250 and 350 cc events. In these last two events Hailwood showed winning form, setting new race and lap records in both.
But this major achievement of the day was the 'Race of the Year', against the toughest opposition. Major rivals were last year's winner, Giacomo Agostini of Italy, riding a 500 cc M.V. Agusta, and Britain's Phil Read, on a 250 on Yamaha.
On his six-cylinder 297 cc Honda, only half the capacity of Agostini's Agusta, Hailwood had gained 50 yards (metres) from Phil Read in the first half lap. By lap five Hailwood was eight seconds ahead of Agostini. The tenth lap saw him lapping the slower riders, with Agostini, Read, and John Cooper a little behind.
Hailwood's lead built up, and he crossed the finishing line with the 1.35 mile circuit well and truly 'in his pocket'. Agostini came home 15.2 seconds behind him, and Read was 33.8 seconds away.
Hailwood has now won the 'Race of the Year' on four occasions.
