- Story Text: Behrouz Vossoughi, once one of the leading men of Iranian cinema, was honoured for his contribution to cinema at the 5th Gulf Film Festival held in Dubai on Tuesday (April 10). The veteran actor has recently finished shooting his latest film 'Rhino's Season'.
Vossoughi's visit to Dubai also saw him take on a new challenge. With more than 40 years experience as an actor, and with some 90 films to his credit, Vossoughi is arguably more than qualified to teach a masterclass in acting for Iranians aspiring to break into film.
But the project was a first time experience for Vossoughi himself.
"I was thinking then how can I transfer all this experience to all the young people," said Vossoughi, adding: "I wish that when I go back to my country I have this class in my country for the people that I choose to teach them whatever I have learned in this movie business."
Vossoughi, who has been living in the United States ever since he left Iran 35 years ago, was one of the first Iranian actors to break into roles in foreign films. He starred alongside Anthony Quinn in the 1978 production of the movie "Caravans".
Students paid around $270 to attend the masterclass taught in Farsi. Several took to the stage themselves to improvise next to Vossoughi who then gave them feedback and compared their performances.
Vossoughi says his latest film 'Rhino's Season' will be a competition entry at next month's Cannes Film Festival. The film is by Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi. Vossoughi described the film as both romantic and tragic.
"Very romantic movie, a very tragic movie also, which I love it very much and for all these years that I was waiting for this good story, so many offered stories to me but I didn't like that, all these years, 35 years that I am in exile, you know, I never liked their stories but this one was something else," said the actor who stars alongside Monica Belluci, among an international cast. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
