- Story Text: Hostage crisis over in Germany after police stormed
a cellar where an Iranian man was holding four schoolgirls
at knifepoint.
German police stormed a cellar where an Iranian man
was holding four schoolgirls at knifepoint on Tuesday (April 12),
ending a five-hour siege in a western German
town.
"The situation has ended. a police spokesman at the
scene said. "At 18:12 the building was entered, the
perpetrator was overpowered. Regarding the status of the
hostages, I can unfortunately not tell you anything at the
present time," he added.
He said the hostage-taker was alive.
The man, aged 50, had threatened a bus driver and
snatched the children in Ennepetal, a town near the
industrial Ruhr Valley, at about 1 p.m. (1100 GMT). Six
other children initially held in the bus managed to escape.
The man then barricaded himself and his four hostages,
aged 12 to 16, in the cellar of a nearby house.
Witnesses said he was demanding his family be allowed
to join him in Germany, but police could not confirm that.
"There have been no demands. It's not clear what his
motive is," a police spokesman said before the siege ended.
Police special forces surrounded the building where the
children were being held. The area was cordoned off,
keeping onlookers several hundred metres (yards) away.
