- Story Text: The founder of the now defunct airline Aero Continente, Fernando Zevallos Gonzales, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined 30 million U.S. dollars on drug charges by a Peruvian judge on Monday (December 19).
Zevallos was arrested in November and found guilty of transporting cocaine and using drug proceeds to found his airline in 1992; he had been included in a 2004 U.S. government list of international drug kingpins.
Zevallos has said he is innocent and will appeal.
In 2002, the Chilean authorities opened a money laundering case against the Peruvian company and the airline closed its operations there.
Aero Continente was Peru's leading domestic airline before it was shut down in 2004.
Peru is the second largest producer of coca leaf, which is used to to make cocaine; Colombia is the biggest. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
