Title:Panama: Police Break Up Demonstration And Arrest Opposition Activists
Date:28th March 1988
Summary:Baton-wielding police made scores of arrests in Panama City on March 28 after bursting into a hotel where an anti-government news conference was about to be held. The arrested people were opposition activists and foreign journalists. The raid followed a street demonstration by thousands of anti-government protesters calling for the resignation of Panama's military leader General Manuel Noriega on the eighth day of a general strike. Noriega, accused of drug-trafficking in the United States, refused to resign.
