- Story Text: A British man has been charged with narcotics trafficking after he was arrested at a Bangkok guest house with 1.8 kg (3.96 pounds) of heroin, Thai police said on Monday (August 22).
Matthew David Glyn Jones, 24, was arrested on Friday evening for narcotics possession, police told a news conference.
A hand-cuffed Jones declined to identify his home town, saying only he was from just south of London.
On display at the news conference was the heroin, in four plastic-wrapped packets, and a clamp and a vice which police said he used to compress the heroin.
Jones refused to give details about what he had intended to do with the drugs saying only he was going to "Pack it and send it on." He said he had been living in Thailand for several years, most of the time in Bangkok, and it was the first time he had been involved with drugs.
In a separate case, a Swedish woman was arrested at Bangkok airport after she was found with 7.8 kg (17.16 pounds) of heroin in her luggage, a customs official said.
The woman, identified as Eva Johnsson, 29, was arrested late on Saturday as she was about to board a flight to Zurich.
Heroin trafficking carries the death penalty in Thailand but the sentence is invariably commuted to a lengthy prison term.
