- Story Text: About, 1,500 mourners gathered outside a Milan Church on Monday (3 May) for the funeral of a murdered Italian neo-fascist politician.
40-year-old Enrico Pedenovi, a member of the central committee of the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement Party (MSI) was found dead in his car last Thursday (29 April) with three bullets in his body after an attack by two gunmen.
Signor Pedenovi's death followed violent clashes between right and left wingers in Milan two days earlier when three left wingers were stabbed and one later died. Police have arrested 10 people in connection with this incident, among them a 24-year-old MSI party member.
MSI party leader Giorgio Almirante said at the funeral, "We are at war". Signor Almirante -- under investigation on charges of reconstituting Italy's banned Fascist Party -- said, "We are at war not as a political group but as honest Italians, brave Italians".
The violence in Italy coincides with a period of political uncertainty in the country in the lead up to general elections on 20 June. In the elections the Communists expect to make gains at the expense of centre and right-wing parties.
