  • Story Text: Miguel Padilla, the Argentinian Economy Ministry Under-Secretary murdered on Tuesday (11 April) was buried in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. And following his murder fears are growing among Argentinian Government Ministers and businessmen that a new campaign of violence is planned by left-wing guerrillas.

    SYNOPSIS: Security precautions were in force as the funeral procession arrived at the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. Among those carrying the coffin was Dr. Jose Martinez de Hoz the Economy Minister, who described Senor Padilla's killing as the first in a new wave of violence planned by urban guerrilla groups.

    Senor Padilla had been murdered as he drove to work from his home in San Isidro a suburb of the capital. Two gunmen stopped his car and shot him four times before fleeing. The Montonero guerrilla movement later claimed responsibility for the murder, which has been described as the most important guerrilla operation carried out this year. They said their aim was to create fear and anxiety before the World Cup finals begin at the end of next month.

    According to reports, the murder of Senor Padilla -- who had been involved in formulating government labour and wages policies -- took the security forces by surprise. It had generally been felt that the Montoneros were an inactive force following a naval intelligence report that had put the number of operational guerrillas at only about 300.
