Summary:In the world's worst oil field disaster, 166 people, including three rescuers, were killed and 63 people survived when a gas explosion and fire destroyed the Piper Alpha oil production platform in the North Sea. The Piper Alpha platform, owned by the United States company Occidental Petroleum, was engulfed in flames after the explosion 200 kilometres (120 miles) east of Wick in Scotland on August 7.
