- Story Text: Protesters against U.S. President George W. Bush and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad rally outside the U.N. the day the two leaders are slated to speak at the ongoing sixty second General Assembly session.
Rallies against U.S. President George W. Bush and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dominated the space outside the U.N. on Tuesday (September 25), which is traditionally used for staging protests when world leaders gather for the General Assembly.
The protesters were drawn to the Dag Hammarsjold Plaza near the U.N. as both Bush and Ahmadinejad were slated to address the General Assembly this day.
A huge coalition of New York City grandmothers held a funeral procession to symbolically mourn all those who have died in Iraq and to voice their anger against Bush. The group of grannies, included the Granny Peace Brigade, the Raging Grannies and Grandmothers Against the War. They were joined by protesters from other anti-war groups.
"I wouldn't miss a demonstration. I think we got to end the war, I think we have to get out of Iraq. I think we have to get rid of the idiot President who doesn't represent me but is still in power," said 83-year-old grandmother Frances Goldin.
Also, at the Dag Hammarsjold Plaza, hundreds more gathered to rally against Ahmadinejad and to call for democratic change in Iran. Organized by the Committee Against Ahmadinejad, the rally included many Iranian-Americans who were demanding the expulsion of Ahmadinejad from the U.N. and the United States.
One of the organizers of the rally, Shirin Naman, explained that the protesters supported instead the Iranian political party, People's Mojahedin of Iran, led by activist Maryam Rajavi who they believe can bring about true democracy in Iran.
"We believe that by supporting them, it will bring the change in Iran by Iranians," said Naman.
As some protesters held up banners saying Ahmadinejad equals war and terror, one of the protesters Mohammad Souri explained that they were raising their voice not just against Ahmadinejad, but also against the conservative mullah regime in Iran. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
