Title:Burma: Army Seizes Power And Promises Elections After Order Restored
Date:18th September 1988
Summary:The army seized power in Burma on September 18 and promised to hold democratic multi-party elections after restoring order to the country. After the army ordered a curfew, heavy gunfire and explosions were heard all over Rangoon. The army's orders banning gatherings of more than 5 people were ignored by thousands of student protesters who remained on the streets. People suspected of being government spies had been violently interrogated by the mob of protesters during the month and several of them had been decapitated. The new leader Saw Maung took over on September 18 from recently installed President Maung Maung who was closely associated with Burma's leader for 26 years, General Ne Win.
