- Title: Pakistan-Iran: Demonstrations Continue Over The Satanic Verses
- Date: 1st February 1989
- Summary: The passions aroused by Indian-born Salman Rushdie's book 'The Satanic Verses' continued to sweep through much of the Islamic world in 1989.In February huge crowds in the Pakistani city of Peshawar denounced Rushdie, burned a United States flag with Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's photograph and demanded the London-based author be handed over for execution. In Rawalpindi former Religious Affairs Minister Kausa Niazi called for Rushdie's liquidation. At Tehran University, the then Iranian President Ali Khameini injected a hint of possible compromise by saying that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's order to murder Rushdie might be lifted if the writer apologised to the Moslem world for having insulted it.
