A French bookshop in Hong Kong, home to Asia's biggest French community, began selling Charlie Hebdo's "survival edition" on Thursday (January 15).
Over 300 people pre-ordered the first edition of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo after Islamist gunmen killed 12 people outside its Parisian office, according to the bookshop Parentheses' general manager, Madeline Progin.
Hong Kong's French population was estimated to be about 15,000 in 2012, according to a Hong Kong government article, but Progin said customers who had ordered copies of the magazine were not only French - many were local Hong Kong residents learning French.
"I think we have to stand to defend the freedom of expression wherever we are, whether we are French or not French. And since we are French bookshop here in Hong Kong, it is also our role to do that," Progin said.
Some people began placing orders even before the magazine was released in Paris on Wednesday (January 14).
Robert Ferguson, originally from Britain, said he contacted the bookshop for a copy last Friday (January 9).
He said he bought the magazine to show support.
"I do think we should also all be looking at media freedom and press freedom during this time. Satirical magazines, I think, have a great place in our societies, and to find one so brutally attacked, I think it's time that we all stood up," Ferguson said.
Millions of copies of the "survivors' edition" were printed, dwarfing the usual 60,000 print run. On its cover, a tearful Mohammad holds a "Je suis Charlie" sign under the words "All is forgiven."
The bookshop in Hong Kong only received 18 copies on Thursday, but hoped to get hundreds more - possibly including copies in English - by next week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
