- Story Text: INTRO: Hospital staff in Stirling struggle to save casualties as victims of a gun rampage are flown there for emergency treatment.
-------------------------------------------------------------- A heavily armed gunman shot dead 16 children aged five and six and a woman teacher on Wednesday (Wednesday 13) in a "slaughter of the innocents" at a Scottish school, before turning his gun on himself.
The man burst into the gymnasium of Dunblane Primary School as the day's lessons began, opening fire on the children and their teacher. Fifteen children were killed in the gymnasium and one died later in hospital, a police spokesman said.
Parents queued to discover whether their children were among the dead amid scenes of hysteria and grief outside the school.
Pupils sobbed, parents and teachers comforted each other.
Up to 17 children were injured and some were undergoing emergency surgery in nearby hospitals. Some of the injured children were flown by air ambulance to hospitals in other parts of Scotland.
In Stirling, Consultant Paediatrician Doctor Jack Beattiesaid that seven children had undergone or were undergoing emergency surgery. He said 13 children and three adults were initially brought to the hospital, adding that one child died shortly after arrival.
A further three children and one adult, who were not seriously injured, were transferred to hospital in Falkirk.
Beattie thanked hospital staff who came in to work in response to the emergency. The hospital's major incident plan had worked extremely well and the hospital's accident and emergency department would be reopening at 1800gmt that night, he said.
"Under exceptional circumstances and especially with young children involved, I would like to thank all staff for their efforts. Of course, the thoughts of all the staff here go out to the families, friends and relatives," he said.
The primary school, one of two in the Scottish market town, teaches 720 children between the ages of three and 12.
Dunblane, with a population of 7,300, is a small market town north of Stirling. It is a popular commuting base for people who work in Stirling four miles (6.4 km) away and Edinburgh, one hour away by road.
