- Story Text: New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio called for a moment's silence on Wednesday (January 7) while attending a police swearing-in ceremony.
De Blasio condemned an attack on a magazine publication in Paris that left 12 people dead, including two police officers, in the worst militant attack on French soil in decades.
"The eyes of the world are on Paris. A heinous terrorist attack goes at the very fabric of a free society. This was an attack on those who speak freely. It was an attack on the news media. It was an attack on freedom of expression. It was an attack on the values we hold dear and that you're preparing to defend, so it's a sober moment, it's a difficult moment, but it's also a moment to take stock of how important the work is that you are about to do," De Blasio said.
"Our thoughts and our prayers are with the families of those who are lost today. At least 12 individuals killed. At least two of them police officers who were defending lives of people who were simply expressing their views in a free society," he added.
Hooded gunmen stormed the Paris offices of weekly satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
One of the men was captured on video outside the building waving his arms and shouting "Allah!". After dozens of shots rang out, two assailants were seen calmly leaving the scene. One police officer was seen being shot as he lay wounded.
The gunmen fled eastwards towards the Paris suburbs, dumping their car in a residential area, police said. They then hijacked another car before running over a pedestrian and disappearing.
FBI Director James Comey on Wednesday said the U.S. agency is working with French law enforcement to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
New York Police Department (NYPD) Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Counterterrorism, John J. Miller, released a statement on Wednesday, saying his city was prepared in the wake of the France attack.
"New York City has the most sophisticated counterterrorism capability in the U.S. There are standing contingency plans in place to adjust police deployments based on any unfolding situation in the world," the statement read.
