- Story Text: On December 14, 2014, a deranged 20-year-old went on a shooting rampage at a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut, marking one of the deadliest gun violence incidents in U.S. history.
Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother before driving to and forcing himself into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, where he shot dead twenty first-graders, ages 6 and 7, and six staff members before killing himself.
The tragedy rocked the suburban town of 27,000 people and sparked a national debate about school violence and access to firearms.
A recent Connecticut report showed Lanza had been living in nearly complete isolation, communicating with no one except an online network of people obsessed with mass murder.
Newtwon officials are considering tearing down the house where Lanza began his rampage.
Sandy Hook Elementary School has already been razed.
After the Newtown tragedy, Connecticut passed several new gun control and mental health measures, but a similar and more national effort pushed by President Barack Obama never made it through Congress.
While several states have moved to tighten gun control measures and background checks at the local level, opponents of gun control continue to outspend gun control supporters, with more than half the anti-gun-control contributions coming from the National Rifle Association, the powerful gun rights lobby. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
