Summary:An explosion and a fire on board the US battleship 'Iowa' on April 19 cost the lives of 47 out of the 1,575 sailors on board. The disaster involved an explosion and fire inside one of the 3 gun turrets on board the 58,000-tonne battleship. The bodies of the seamen were taken to a naval base in Puerto Rico on August 20 and flown to Dover Air Force base in Delaware where a memorial service was held for them.
