- Story Text: Jerry Lewis talked about taking the Broadway revival of the musical "Damn Yankees" on tour around the United States and the world on November 28.
Based on Douglass Wallop's novel "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant," "Damn Yankees" is a song and dance musical comedy about a passionate baseball fan who sells his soul to the Devil so that he can become the world's greatest ballplayer and help his favorite team beat the Newe York Yankees.
Lewis stepped into the role of the Devil, named Mr. Appelgate, earlier this year. The Broadway revival of the show opened in March of 1994. The original musical, written by the late Broadway legend George Abbott, was first produced on Broadway in May of 1955. The show won eight 1956 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
Lewis is perhaps best known for his 10-year partnership with fellow entertainer Dean Martin and for his efforts as National Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Each year, he hosts the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon to raise money to battle the disease.
The tour of "Damn Yankees" will travel to 50 cities around the United States over the next several years before heading to Europe and Japan. Jerry Lewis will stay with the cast the whole time. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
