- Story Text: Protesters gathered at French diplomatic missions across the Americas on Monday (July 10), a day after French commandos tear-gassed and seized the Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior II, in the South Pacific.
The ship, and the demonstrators, were opposed to renewed nuclear tests by France scheduled to begin in September on Muroroa Atoll in the South Pacific.
French President Jacques Chirac's decision to end the previous French government's moritorium on nuclear testing has outraged Greenpeace campaigners throughout the world.
In both Washington and Buenos Aires, demonstrators blocked the gates to the French embassy and hung protest banners on the outer fence.
In Washington, police arrested several protesters who were led away chanting anti-nuclear slogans.
In Santiago, Chile, hundreds of protesters took to the streets in a march leading to the French embassy.
Many of the Chilean demonstrators wore death masks and gas masks -- as well as costumes resembling French President Jacques Chirac.
