Summary:During 1989, armed groups massacred hundreds of people and burnt their bodies on the sides of roads or dumped them in rivers. The government announced on October 15 it would launch a government inquiry into the activities of parliamentary groups accused of the killings. On October 14 another 20 people were killed just outside the capital Colombo and their bodies put on burning tyres.
