Summary:The South African government took its boldest reform move so far on October 15, freeing Nelson Mandela's close comrade Walter Sisulu and seven other prominent political prisoners. Thousands of dancing, chanting supporters gave the elderly black activists a tumultuous welcome after their simultaneous release at dawn in townships near Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Other released prisoners who arrived home to an ecstatic welcome were Andrew Mlangeni, 63, Wilton Mkwayi, 67, Elias Mostsoaledi, 65, and the eldest of them all, 80-year-old Oscar Mpetha.
