- Story Text: One devotee is killed and dozens injured jostling to
touch the statue of the Black Nazarene during celebrations
in Manila.
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo joined
thousands of barefoot devotees in the annual procession for
the feast of the Black Nazarene in Manila on Friday
(January 9).
Arroyo, who is running for re-election in May, attended
the mass at Saint John the Baptist Church as thousands
pulled the 200-year-old life-size statue of Jesus, known as
the Black Nazarene, from the church through congested
downtown Manila.
As the procession got under way, one man was crushed
and killed by the cart carrying the statue.
About a dozen men and women fainted and were carried to
ambulances, radio news reports said.
The feast of the Black Nazarene is one of the largest
celebrations in the Philippines, a mainly Catholic nation.
For devotees of the Black Nazarene, just a touch is
said to carry miraculous powers -- and the prospect of
getting close to the statue is what attracts believers to
swarm around the image as it is pulled by carriage out of
the church.
More than 1,500 police and volunteer marshals guarded
the procession that wove across a main road and through
back alleys under a scorching sun.
The statue is also brought out of the church on Good
Friday.
After mass, mostly men wearing white shirts or maroon
robes braved the heat and risked a stampede to ask special
favours or give thanks for ones already granted as they
followed the statue through the Plaza Miranda.
Many tried to climb up the cart but were pushed back by
marshals.
Others squeezed their way in to grab a piece of the
rope used to pull the cart or threw white towels at
marshals, asking them to wipe the cloths on the statue.
The Feast of the Black Nazarene has its roots in
17th-century Mexico, where a priest bought the statue
before bringing it to Manila in 1606.
It has been at Saint John the Baptist Church since
1787.
In recent years, the sculpture has cracked and church
officials reinforced the body with stainless steel to keep
it from breaking apart.
