- Story Text: Former Czech President Vaclav Havel voted in EU
elections but candidate and former porn star 'Dolly
Buster', was not allowed to vote.
The Czechs became the first people from a former
communist European state to vote in a European Parliament
election on Friday (June 11), as the European Union (EU)
staged the biggest ballot in its history.
Vaclav Havel, the playwright and statesman who led the
Czech Republic from communism to the brink of EU
membership, was among the first to vote with his wife
Dagmar.
"I did not vote for people who see the EU as a group
of our enemies," he said after voting in a diplomatic
quarter near his former presidential seat at Prague Castle.
Voting rules were strictly enforced when Nora
Baumberger, also known as porn star "Dolly Buster" went to
vote.
An election official told Baumberger, who is an EU
candidate of Nezavisla iniciativa (Independent initiative),
that she was not allowed to vote because she was not on the
list of the voters.
Baumberger, who starred in German sex movies before
becoming a producer and the owner of a string of sex shops,
said that there always seemed to be a problem with her
papers and complained of discrimination. She said that, if
elected, she would raise the issue of discrimination in the
EU parliament as her first priority.
"This is the first thing, which I will change in the
EU, discrimination I am discriminated and I cannot vote"
As a recent resident of Germany, Dolly's Czech
residency may not have been registered in time for the
election.
Of the 10 states which joined the EU just six weeks
ago, the Czech Republic was the only one voting on Friday.
The Latvians and Maltese will cast their first European
votes on Saturday, while the Czechs carry on voting. The
other seven new countries to join the EU will join most of
the bloc in voting on Sunday.
By Sunday night, some 350 million Europeans from
Lisbon to Latvia will have had the chance to vote for the
expanded 732-member European Parliament based in
Strasbourg.
