Summary:East Germany's ruling Communist Party took the momentous step on November 9 of throwing open its borders to the West - a move which rendered the Berlin Wall obsolete and threw into turmoil the whole political map of Europe. Within hours the first of an estimated 1.4 million East Germans who applied to emigrate began arriving in West Germany and West Berlin. But perhaps the most dramatic effect of the move was the effective end of the Berlin Wall.
