Summary:An antigovernment rally by more than 50,000 demonstrators in Prague ended in violent confrontation on November 17 when Czech police used truncheons and tear gas to disperse them. Chanting slogans demanding free elections and an end to communist rule protesters assembled outside Vysehrad Cathedral. After the police attack many of the demonstrators, bleeding from blows by the police, fled down side streets.
