Prague's 650-year-old Charles University presented an honorary doctorate of philosophy to former US President George Bush on November 17, citing his part in promoting democracy and ending the Cold War. On the 10th anniversary of Prague's peaceful "Velvet Revolution" which ended decades of totalitarian Communist rule, Bush was honoured for his body of political science writing and its practice as president of the United States. Czech President Vaclav Havel, accompanied by Prime Minister Milos Zemin put flowers and lit a candle at the memorial to those who lost their lives during the revolution. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher unveiled a statue in the Czech capital of Winston Churchill, the British wartime leader seen by many Czechs as a symbol of freedom. A crowd of 5,000 on November 17 watched the unveiling of the 3. 5-metre (10-foot) monument in Churchill Square as the Czechs began celebrating the 10th anniversary of the overthrow of communism.
