- Story Text: Dmitry Klokov, a Russian Olympic weightlifter, continues his training in an Olympic training centre outside of Moscow, weights hoping for a place on the London 2012 team.
All of the athletes' work takes place under the watchful eye of Russian National Weightlifting Team head trainer David Rigert, whose criteria for members of the 2012 Olympic team is strict.
"We are taking on to the team those who can win the medals. We have enough people to fill all of the licences. In the end it happens how it happens. There can be different surprises," Rigert said.
One of those athletes is the 2008 Olympic silver medalist and 2005 world champion in the under 105 kilogram category, weightlifter Dmitry Klokov. As he warms up and gradually increases the weight on his bar, Rigert watches and offers advice.
Klokov hopes to represent his country again, this time in London.
"For any athlete, the Olympics means the same thing. It's the top of everything you've been doing for many years. You can say it's the point where the results are compiled. It's the maximum you can get in your field," Klokov says.
And, despite the competition, he says, his sights are set on bringing home a gold.
"Judging from how my competition trains, the competition is going to be very tough. In any case, Russians will battle for first and second place, just because two athletes are going. And I hope the second and first place will be Russians," Klokov says.
On the day that Reuters visited Klokov's training, he lifted more than the world record, which stands at 436 kg for combined clean and jerk and snatch lifts.
Weightlifting is a family affair for the Klokovs. Dmitry's father Vyacheslav Klokov won the world championships in 1983, the same year Dmitry was born, and he held many world records.
At his parents' house outside of Moscow, Klokov practices lifts in a weight room his father built, that showcases both Klokovs' medals and weightlifting memorabilia. The walls are adorned with photographs of a young Vyacheslav and Dmitry's Olympics silver-medal moment. Even Klokov's toddler daughter watches her father practice and plays with a child-sized barbell.
The elder Klokov says his son's goals for the London Olympics are different from those in Beijing.
"As far as the last Olympics is concerned we were just dreaming of getting there. We dreamed of getting any medal. He got there and won silver, and we were terribly happy," Vyacheslav Klokov said.
"The task is to get there and not get any injuries, and the second task is to be ready to fight for the gold. And I think for that we need to raise the total amount to about 435 kilograms. It's a very high result. But even this result cannot guarantee a gold," he said.
While Klokov and 2011 under 105 kg world champion weightlifter Khadzhimurat Akkayev were exempt from competing in the European Championships in April to concentrate on the Olympics, they will participate in the Russian National Championship at the end of May. Then, Rigert says, the full team will be formed. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
