- Story Text: A cold snap paralysed Turkey on Monday (January 25) with heavy snow blocking road access to more than 2800 villages across the country.
The snowstorm in Turkey's financial capital Istanbul led to power, gas and water cuts.
People said the amount of snow made it difficult to get home from work.
"This is not good for Istanbul. Not good for transportation. People cannot go to their work and some shops are not open," Istanbul resident Selim Senguler said.
With temperatures plummeting to below 0 degrees Celsius (32 F), disabled state employees were given three days off.
The western province of Edirne saw a low of -15 degrees Celsius (5 F).
Heavy snow resulted in traffic jams and flight cancellations in most provinces.
Drifting snow and high winds made driving in Bolu treacherous. In Mus, 15 cars were stuck in snow; 120 people were rescued after three hours.
Eastern Turkey was expected to be hit by temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius (-4 F) in the next few days, while the Black Sea coast is expected to see lows of -15 degrees Celsius (5 F), along with snowfall, rare for that part of Turkey. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
