- Story Text: Freezing temperatures engulfed Greece on Tuesday (January 31) closing roads, schools and causing water shortages.
Temperatures throughout Greece dropped below zero and were expected to reach as low as at least minus 14 degrees celsius whilst heavy winds reaching eight beaufort.
Water shortages from freezing pipes were reported in the Athens capital, where the temperature fell to minus one degrees celsius, while in some parts of the country schools were kept shut and children stayed at home, much to the delight of some who spent the day playing in the snow.
On many roads, passage was only possible with chains, while snow graders were called in to clear roads.
Local media said one man died of hypothermia attempting to illegally cross the river border from Turkey into Greece.
The cold weather front, which began building last week, is expected to continue for the next few days. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
