- Story Text: Many of the waterways that criss-cross France were frozen up on Tuesday (February 7) as temperatures of 15 degrees below freezing point hit the country as an wave of exceptional cold swept in from eastern Europe.
In Paris, the historic Canal St Martin that runs into the centre of town from the north was transformed into a winter wonderland as several centimetres of ice formed along the waterway which is a popular destination with tourists.
Temperatures in the capital have remained well below freezing for at least five days prompting fears that the country's electricity would be overloaded as French weather authority Meteo France issued a severe weather warning for the whole of the eastern half of the country amid forecasts that temperatures could fall again to -15 over parts of the southeast.
Southern parts of the country normally associated with hot weather and an outdoors lifestyle such as Toulouse shivered under unseasonable temperatures of seven degrees below zero, while frozen fountains in the town offered passers by an eerie sculpture. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
